Welcome to Y6!

This week in Year 6:

Dear parents and carers,

The brightest moment this week came in our science lesson on voltage. The children were experimenting with what happens to a bulb's brightness as batteries are added and voltage increased. They were genuinely amazed to see how bright the bulb became when they added the maximum number of batteries and it was lovely to see them all so excited about learning science.

We have had some terrifying story-ending predictions written for our Francis Brandywine project, where krakens, monsters and more are all out to get poor Francis. The sheer horror of some of the stories was spine-chilling; their imagination for the macabre clearly knows no bounds!

Our outdoor PE for this term is netball and we enjoyed being outside and practising different passes then attacking and defending and real progress was shown because the children listened and tried really hard.

For homework this week, please ensure your child brings their completed books in on Monday. If they do not, they have to sit doing nothing whilst marking is done, which is a real shame, plus their book won't be marked. There had been some lenience previously where children were allowed to bring the books on Tuesday but at this stage, where we are so close to SATS, completing and marking homework really is important.

Only one child completed their reading record last week. It is a requirement that children read at home and write at least 3 entries in the reading record. Reading is the best way to improve spelling, writing ability and comprehension and your support in encouraging reading at home would be hugely appreciated.

Many of the children are not able to recall their times tables. Achieving accuracy and fast recall of times tables would be a real help for their SATS and for maths at secondary school. We will be doing a weekly times table written challenge to encourage them to learn these. If you could quiz them at home too with the occasional sum, that would be great!

Many thanks.

Miss Lakey
